Saturday (12.28.19) UPDATE

We ask that those walking today on Weiskopf do not tee off until after 11am.

Thank you,
JA

We will probably have a frost hold Saturday morning, before temperatures reach the 40s/50s.  Please look to this site and for a Zingle to any delays.

Course Conditions (12.27.19)

We will allow walkers on the Weiskopf Course today.

Please be mindful to replace all divots and repair all ball marks.  The turf is not actively growing, despite the current temperatures, and the divots and ball marks that are not repaired in December will stay with us until spring.

We are without continuous cart paths due to work street work on #s 12-13 Weiskopf and #5 Devlin, please exercise caution.

The range is to remained closed.

Info

Below is a link to some negative effects to golf during the winter months:

Course Conditions (12.26.19)

With the unseasonably warm weather; we will allow walkers to play to the temporary greens on the Devlin Course (1-6, 9, and 17-18).  A safety reminder that the bridge is out on #5 while we work on its replacement.

We are hopeful to allow walkers on Weiskopf wither later today or tomorrow; there are still areas of snow coverage and frozen turf.

As a reminder:  the range is closed for the remainder of the season, we will not be setting it up with balls and it is unable to be picked.

Course Conditions (12.24.19)

Due to the ground still being frozen we will be forced to keep both courses closed.  Ground temperatures take longer to warm than air temperatures and we do not want to run the risk of long term damage.  We are hopeful that with a longer warm period that we can allow walking on either course.

Just a reminder that we are working on replacing the bridge on #5 Devlin and it is currently out.

Thank you and this department and myself wish everyone a happy holiday.

#5 Devlin

We will be working on a replacement bridge on #5 Devlin and I do not think that this will be a quick project.  For members who walk the courses in the winter, please use cation in this area.

Course Update

Not the best photo we've taken however, soil temperatures are in the 30s, and most likely lower in shaded or low areas.  This is the temperature in which damage can occur beneath the surface.  Even though the sun may be out and air temps may be in the 40s, ultimately it is the soil temperature is what dictates if/when we can allow play.

2019 Recap (Part 2)

In looking at this past season, we can not be successful without the guys that do the "heavy lifting" on a daily basis.  We have embraced the philosophy of accuracy by volume when it comes to staffing.  To this point below are a few numbers from 2019:

*The most crew members that we had on staff at any given day was 28 on June 25th.

*At the height of the season we had 42 individuals on payroll.

*From January 1st through today, this department has worked 26,370 hours at Quail Hollow CC.  That is the equivalent to 3 years worth of hours.

It is also worth noting that in this industry we have four generations of workers:

Baby Boomers (1946-64)
Generation X (1965-76)
Millennials (1977-95)
Generation Z (1996-present)

Motivation and management is different for each group and our superintendents work hard to ensure that this staff is efficient in the way that they move around the course and also to optimize the skill set.

Course Conditions (12.8.19) and Info

There is a frost delay until 11am today due to freezing temperatures.

We will be forced to keep carts on paths and this is due to two different reasons:

1) There are wet areas throughout the property

AND

2) Golfing in the winter months is incredibly dangerous to the plant.  There will be areas of the property that will remain frozen such as shaded and low level areas.  Traffic of any kind, either cart or foot, will shear off the roots of the plant, causing damage that will become evident in the spring.

Finally, in a few surveys I noticed people asking us why we don't continue to cut the turf, mainly on greens.  We, in Northeast Ohio, are susceptible to a disease that forms under heavy amounts of snow.  In order to combat this problem we make a pesticide application in November that coats the leaf blade through the winter months.  Any mowing that occurs would be to remove the pesticide from the plant.

Please enjoy the ability to swing a club in December and trust that we'll get greens sped up during the regular season months.

Thank you,
JA

Update (12.3.19)

As winter begins to set in we wanted to pass along a quick update on two off-season activities.

First, we will be working to complete the indoor driving net in the cart barn near the practice green.  Some attention needs to be paid to the netting and the aged hitting mats.  We will communicate with the pro shop and this site when we have completed the area.

Secondly, we will be placing temporary greens on the Devlin Course to allow walkers to play if the weather permits.  This is something that we did not do last year and it will be numbers 1-6, 9, and 17 & 18.  This will allow for a 9 hole round without having to walk all the way around 7 and 8.

Stay warm,
JA
